College Years at Stanford

I Know (1977)

YouTube demo

Wrapped inside a roll of yellowed newspapers

Set aside where no one ever goes

But I know, I know, I know

I know, I know, I know

People say you look like you are searching

But all they see are mirrors in your eyes

But I know, I know, I know

I know, I know, I know

There’s feelings in your heart I’ve never touched

There’s words you’ve longed to say but never found

But I know, I know, I know

I know, I know, I know

I know what you mean without you saying anything

I know what’s in your mind by all the love that’s in your eyes

But I know, I know, I know

I know, I know, I know

Keeping My Eyes on You (1978)

YouTube demo

Every time I’ve tried to tell you

You have turned away

Still I feel that I should let you stay

Take your choice to leave my life

Or keep your heart with me

But all the time, I’m keeping my eyes on you, my love

Keeping my eyes on you

Every day I try to give you

Everything I should

Understanding life has made it good

Take a star of happiness

And let it be your sun

And all the time, I’m keeping my eyes on you, my love

Keeping my eyes on you

My eyes are always on you

So don’t even doubt that I’ll always be true

Every word I choose to sing

Is spilling out like love

Every thought is meant to mean enough

Tantalizing tales of wonder

Wait beyond the fringe

And all the time, I’m keeping my eyes on you, my love

Keeping my eyes on you

Keeping my eyes on you, my love

Keeping my eyes on you

Come What May (1979)

Girl, I just want to come inside

I don't want to hurt your pride I won't ever tell

Girl, if love was just a passing phase

I wouldn't want to run this race I wouldn't even try

But love means more than the oceans swirling around the land

Love is more than emotion I'm trying to make you understand

Try to make you understand

Come what may or it might not

I'll give it all I've got

I'll tell you what I want to do

Time will tell and it won't lie

You'll see it with your eye

You'll feel when I try to ...

Girl, nothing ever goes as planned

Even when you make a stand everybody knows

Girl, if you take a look around

Maybe then you'll see the sound of what I'm trying to say

That love roars wild like a tiger circling around his prey

Love's a child that's inside you don't it make you want to play?

Don't it make you want to play?

Come what may or it might not

I'll give it all I've got

I'll tell you what I want to do

Time will tell and it won't lie

You'll see it with your eye

You'll feel when I try to ...

Girl, every single word I say

Wouldn't matter anyway if you came along

Girl, when you take the time to think

All you do is rearrange what you already know

The time is now please don't worry think of it as just a dance

You'll slow down in a hurry this could be our only chance

This could be our only chance

Come what may or it might not

I'll give it all I've got

I'll tell you what I want to do

Time will tell and it won't lie

You'll see it with your eye

You'll feel when I try to ...

Woke Up This Morning (1979)

Woke up this morning crawled into bed

And as I lay there here's what she said

Everything's all right everything's fine

So what are you doing blowing your mind all the time

Well I was walking downtown who did I meet

But an exact duplicate copy of me

Both of us running as fast as we can

To get away from the other that other strange strange man

Everybody's speeding to work burning up gas

They know it's crazy but they don't want to be last

I'll just sit here singing maybe get stoned

And I won't ever get lonely lonely being all on my own

All on my own now

I Know it's Right (1979)

Well it feels so good

To be back where I belong

And I know I could

Stay forever if we had that long

And I know it’s right

When I feel like I do tonight

When I feel like I do

When I took your hand

You quivered like you didn’t know

Didn’t understand

That I could never let you go

And I know it’s right

When I feel like I do tonight

When I feel like I do

In the nick of time I felt your heartbeat

In the nick of time I got a real treat

In the nick of time I finally knew it was real

When it’s comin’ on

I’ll never let it slip away

And it feels so strong

It makes me want you every day

And I know it’s right

When I feel like I do tonight

When I feel like I do

In the nick of time I felt your heartbeat

In the nick of time I got a real treat

In the nick of time I finally knew it was real

Give It to You Now (1980)

She's not the kind of girl to ask you

Where you're gonna be tomorrow

She knows that she can leave if she wants to

She doesn't want to deal with sorrow

Let me give it to you now baby

I know how and maybe

In a little while baby

We'll see you smile

You see her standing at the party

Hiding 'neath her plastic cover

All eyes are gazing at her body

They call her the elastic lover

Let me give it to you now baby

I know how and maybe

In a little while baby

We'll see you smile

And every time you try to tell her

How you really feel about it

She seems to climb inside her shelter

And make you try to live without it

Let me give it to you now baby

I know how and maybe

In a little while baby

We'll see you smile

It's nice to see you come around here

Nice to hear how you've been doin’

I hope you never hear the sound dear

Of all of this impending ruin

Let me give it to you now baby

I know how and maybe

In a little while baby

We'll see you smile

Commentary

As this picture suggests, my years at Stanford were marked by seasons of haze – as the “goody two-shoes” behavior of my valedictorian performance in high school (Straight A’s, squeaky-clean abstinence from all forms of vice, Senior Class President, editor of the school newspaper, etc.) was suddenly unshackled amid the many temptations of college life. Despite succumbing to some of these, I still managed to graduate on-time with a decent GPA in a rather challenging field (chemical engineering). I also found time to inspire a notorious character (Madigan), who appeared each weekday morning in a Stanford Daily comic strip (Dupie), penned by a close fraternity brother, Gil Morales, who subsequently went on to become an investment wizard in the financial world.

The songs of this era were often dominated by the solemnity of unrequited love, but I also now see a few of them, including this set’s Keeping My Eyes on You, to be “love songs” from God to me, even though I thought I was writing about them about a long-distance love interest. Providence.
