Well I figured they were gone
That my romancin’ days were through
But then ya’ came along
To bring a different point of view
You shattered preconceptions
That had settled in my mind
Gave my world a new 'die-rection'
And this heart a second life
It’s been a minute
I ain’t sure if it’ll work
It’s been a minute
Am I just a clueless jerk?
Can’t be sure where love will go
Until we’re in it
So for now all I really know is …
It’s been a minute
Like strangers in a foreign land
We slowly navigate our way
Travelin’ hand in hand
While we savor brighter days
Troubled by distraction
‘Cause you complicate my mind
Overwhelmed by an attraction
I was sure I’d never find
Only a minute
Is this feelin’ really true?
Only a minute
How could we have a clue?
Can’t be sure where love will go
Until we’re in it
So for now all I really know is …
It’s been a minute
Can true love come at first sight?
Well I guess we’ll find out
When I see your smile at first light
There won’t be any doubt
In just a minute
That’s all it took for me
In just a minute
Feelin’ blessed as I could be
Can’t be sure where love will go
Until we’re in it
So for now all I really know is it’s been …
Quite a minute
It’s been a minute

Wanderin’ through the desert
Tempted at each turn
Despairin’ God had left us
To leave our hearts to burn
But it’s clear what He was doin’
While we languished in the breeze
He had destined all along
To bring you near to me
Near to me
The Good Lord had it planned
Near to me
Now I understand
All those lonely years behind us
As far as I can see
The Lord is here to guide us
And keep you near to me
The Good Book says it well
Recorded for all time
I am my beloved’s
And my beloved’s mine
As we climb the highest mountain
And we cross the deepest sea
His Spirit lives within us
To keep you here with me
Here with me
It is written in the stars
Here with me
No matter where you are
All those lonely years behind us
As far as I can see
The Lord is here to guide us
And keep you near to me
Though distance or distractions
Might make it seem we’re far apart
There’s no way for you to leave
This special place within my heart
Dear to me
So precious in my mind
Dear to me
So gentle and so kind
All those lonely years behind us
As far as I can see
The Lord is here to guide us
And keep you near to me
The Lord is here to guide us
And keep you near to me
They say it took Him six days
Usin' nothin' but His words
To fashion all the vastness
Of this amazing universe
But as He neared the finish
Words alone just wouldn’t do
He saved up somethin' special
For the day that God made you
When God made you
There was nothin' else to say
When God made you
Then I simply knelt to pray
I try to thank Him, but no words
Could ever be as true
As the wonder of your beauty
That I feel through and through
I was forever changed
When God made you
In a deep and silent slumber
He gently opened up my chest
Took a part of me and formed you
Filled you with His Holy Breath
He sent us on our journeys
Far apart but now that’s through
A reunited perfect union
From what had once been two
When God made you
It took my breath away
When God made you
My darkness turned to day
I try to thank Him, but no words
Could ever be as true
As the wonder of your beauty
That I feel through and through
I was forever changed
When God made you
My eyes could never weary
Of gazing at your face
Our hearts beating so clearly
As we marvel at His Grace
When God made you
My world became complete
When God made you
The bitter taste turned sweet
I try to thank Him, but no words
Could ever be as true
As the wonder of your beauty
That I feel through and through
I was forever changed
When God made you
I was forever changed
When God made you

We’ve got our good and valid reasons
For sometimes bein’ on the road
But all this waitin’ on the seasons
Leaves an ache deep in my soul
I’ve been checkin’ your flight status
And waitin’ for you to get home
So we can spend some time together
I need to see you and feel close
I don’t care about your next trip
‘Cause tonight I’m not alone
This glass of wine has got one last sip
Pay the check and take me home
Take me home
Ta-ay-ay-ay-ke me home
Come on now, take me home
I need to go there
It’s been so long
Absence makes the heart grow fonder
And our reunions taste so sweet
Survived those lonely nights without you
Knowin’ you’d come back to me
Now wrap your lovin’ arms around me
Hold me tight and don’t let go
Unaware of my surroundin’s
I’ll find the peace that makes me whole
So I don’t care about your next trip
‘Cause tonight I’m not alone
This glass of wine has got one last sip
Pay the check and take me home
Pay the check and take me home
Just pay the check and take me home
Michelle Alvey helped fix the first verse
Well, I ain’t sayin’ everythin’ is perfect
We know we've got our rough spots to work through
But bein’ with Michelle is such a pure fit
It must be from the Lord, I know it's true
Yeah, the Lord has brought Michelle and me together
For eternal purposes so good and true
He’ll reshape us through the winds and stormy weather
Till there’s nothin’ Michelle and me couldn’t do
The path that lies before us idn’t easy
Obstacles and troubles line the way
But through the power of prayer an’ intercedin’
We’ll conquer all and keep evil at bay
Well, the Lord has brought Michelle and me together
For eternal purposes so good and true
He’ll reshape us through the winds and stormy weather
Till there’s nothin’ Michelle and me couldn’t do
Anytime a hint of doubt
Invades our minds or makes us blind
To all His Grace and that we’re truly blessed
It’s then we cry a simple prayer
And suddenly we know He’s there
Reminding us that His Love is the best
Well, I can’t say exactly where we’re goin’
But I am sure to Whom we do belong
Walking with the Lord will keep us growin’
A three-strand-cord is thirty times as strong
Well, the Lord has brought Michelle and me together
For eternal purposes so good and true
He’ll reshape us through the winds and stormy weather
Till there’s nothin’ Michelle and me couldn’t do
Nothin’ Michelle and me couldn’t do
Nothin’ Michelle and me couldn’t do
There’s a debt that I can’t pay off
Though I’ve labored all my life
All those years without a day off
All those dark and lonely nights
And I know I don’t deserve it
He knows the things I’ve done
I’m so far from bein’ perfect
Yet He loves me like a son
Thank You, Lord
For everything you do
Thank You, Lord
For just bein’ you
There’s no deed that I could offer
To make You love me more
I cry out to your altar …
Thank You, Lord
There are times when I can’t feel You
And You seem so far away
Then You turn to show the Real You
And I bow my head to pray
Thank You, Lord
For everything you do
Thank You, Lord
For just bein’ you
There’s no deed that I could offer
To make You love me more
I cry out to your altar …
Thank You, Lord
I’m invited to this table
This great Thanksgiving Feast
And as far I am able
My praise shall never cease
There’s no deed that I could offer
To make You love me more
I cry out to your altar …
Thank You, Lord
Thank You, Lord
Thank You, Lord
Tellin’ ya’ boy if that’s the way ya’ really feel
Might be time to seal the deal
Time to tie the knot
Put a ring on it
So go and ask my Dad and if he approves
Then it’s time to make your move
Time to take the plunge
Go and git’ ‘er done
‘Cause I know you got that hunger
But you ain’t gittin’ any younger
So if yer’ sure that this is it
Ya’ better get and git’ us hitched
Well there’s some folk who might call it poisonin’
But go and call the lawyers in
Git’ them to write it up
A nice and tight pre-nup
Git’ the feelin’ that ya’ might wanna consummate
So let’s wed ‘fore it’s too late
For you to finalize
A proper weddin’ night
‘Cause I know you got that hunger
But you ain’t gittin’ any younger
So if yer’ sure that this is it
Ya’ better get and git’ us hitched
Tellin’ ya’ darlin’ that’s the way I really feel
I know it’s time to seal the deal
Time to tie the knot
Put a ring on it
I went and asked yer’ Dad and he approves
So now it’s time to make my move
In just a little while
We’re gonna’ walk that aisle
‘Cause ya’ know I got that hunger
And I ain’t gittin’ any younger
I know for shor' that this is it
I’m gonna’ get and git’ us hitched
But only if you say “yes” – that is….
So what d’ ya’ say, Darlin’?
The photo of Michelle Alvey and me was taken on 26-Aug-2025, 10 days after our first date. The next day, we wrote our first song together, It's Been a Minute. It was also my first attempt to use SUNO, which has become a very fun way for both of us to quickly turn initial concepts into radio-ready songs. Powerful!
In early September, Michelle sent me two new songs (with contrasting views on the future course of our budding relationship). Near to Me was my attempt to respond with my thoughts on where we were headed and to keep up with her amazing work. She’s been quite an inspiration!
In mid-September, Livvy and I were on a quick get-away trip to Indiana Dunes (my first visit there). Of course, Michelle was very much on my mind and she had sent me a third great song the Sunday before, so I needed to try to keep pace with her! When God Made You is the result of that additional inspiration.
Pay the Check and Take Me Home began as a direct quote of what Michelle said to me on the evening of 2-Oct-2025, our first dinner date after being apart for a few days. The song emerged over the following weeks.
Michelle had corrected my grammar while reviewing some text on my website, replacing “Michelle and I” with “Michelle and me.” I’ve now adopted this as our name as a couple, sometimes abbreviating it as “M&M.” The first two lines to Michelle and Me were in my head when I woke up in the middle of the night on October 16. I finished the song that same day, although Michelle helped me fix the first verse on October 17.
Thank You, Lord was written over the course of the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving, which Michelle had invited me to spend with her family, over at her sister's place in Springfield MO. I am so grateful that the Lord has brought us together!
Once I arrived in Springfield, I had a great time meeting Michelle's family. And I realized that I might someday be having an important conversation with her Dad. Better Get and Git' Us Hitched is the relevant song that emerged over the next couple of days. I'm still not sure when I will tell Michelle it is posted here. She's too busy to ever check out this website on her own. :-)
