Well it won't be fun
And it won't feel fine
And there won't be few
When the bill comes due
When the bill comes due
You can gasp for air
But there's nothing there
For words to do
When the bill comes due
When the bill comes due
You can grab your stash
And your pile of cash
But they're both no use
When the bill comes due
When the bill comes due
And you won't get far
With your credit card
'Cause it won't go through
When the bill comes due
When the bill comes due
Well there's just one Name
That can quench the flame
Which erupts in blue
When the bill comes due
When the bill comes due
He's the only One
Who has overcome
To make all things new
When the bill comes due
When the bill comes due
So if you confess
That you're in a mess
He will vouch for you
When the bill comes due
When the bill comes due
Jesus paid the price
With His precious life
And His coin is true
When the bill comes due
When the bill comes due
You'll behold His face
And His shining grace
Will envelope you
When the bill comes due
Be gone
The hour has touched the dawn
And I must carry on
To be on my way
Today
And if You should care to pray
It would reach me in that way
And would heal my heart
And start
To pry the years apart
Which have bound me here so hard
In this broken place
I face
All the strange and wondrous ways
You have blessed me with Your grace
Showered down from high
I try
As I fight this urge to cry
Choking on a last goodbye
I can almost hear
You near
As You wipe away the tear
And You banish all my fear
I am newly made
I wait
But I know it's not too late
To live out this holy fate
In the great beyond
Be gone
How ancient
From the fifth day
Heron's wings beating the air
Gliding away
Impatient
Filled with dismay
This broken heart beats alone
Too torn to pray
How ancient all of this seems
Yet how new, haunting my dreams
And with every revelation
There is everlasting truth
Temptation
Taunts in this place
Here in this cavernous tomb
Leaving no trace
Salvation
Offered with grace
Shattering all of this gloom
Filling all space
How ancient all of this seems
Yet how new, haunting my dreams
And with every revelation
There is everlasting truth
Then Jesus
Enters our sphere
Comforting me in my grief
Drawing me near
He pleases
Whispers I hear
Banishing my every care
Whom shall I fear?
How ancient all of this seems
Yet how new, haunting my dreams
And with every revelation
There is everlasting truth
Perfection
Triune and true
Chaos is showered with light
Darkness shot through
Election
Of me and you
Doctrine beyond all our thought
Mysteries new
Mysteries new
Mysteries new
I will give thanks to Thee
For I am fearfully
And wonderfully made
I will give thanks to Thee
For I am fearfully
And wonderfully made
You formed my hidden frame
There in my mother's womb
Before I heard my name
You wove me on Your loom
I will give thanks to Thee
For I am fearfully
And wonderfully made
I will give thanks to Thee
For I am fearfully
And wonderfully made
Wonderful are Thy works
Treasured within my heart
Even these aches and hurts
In a body that's torn apart
I will give thanks to Thee
For I am fearfully
And wonderfully made
I will give thanks to Thee
For I am fearfully
And wonderfully made
A temple to house Thy Spirit
Made to be like Thy Son
Oh that we all would hear it
And live as if we were one
We will give thanks to Thee
For we are fearfully
And wonderfully made
We will give thanks to Thee
For we are fearfully
And wonderfully made
One day the trump shall sound
And these bodies will be for naught
But until that glory's found
Let's take care of what we've got
We will give thanks to Thee
For we are fearfully
And wonderfully made
We will give thanks to Thee
For we are fearfully
And wonderfully made
Hide not Thy face from me
I'm as lonesome as can be
Though all other souls may flee
Hide not Thy face from me
Lord, I depend on You
No one else can pull me through
Within You all things I can do
Lord, I depend on You
Lift me when I am down
When my sin is all around
Crushing me into the ground
Lift me when I am down
Hear, Lord, when I cry out
And my heart is filled with doubt
Though my fears within me shout
Hear, Lord, when I cry out
Hide not Thy face from me
There's no other God but Thee
Break these bonds and set me free
Hide not Thy face from me
Hide not Thy face from me
Here I am, all on my own
I'm longing for, my new home
Where these eyes, will shed no tears
And this heart, will feel no fears
Where it is, I don't know
If I did, I'd surely go
But as it is, my heart just aches
For my new home
I am loved, it is true
With no excuse, for feeling blue
But this world, can box me in
It steals my joy, reveals my sin
How it ends, I don't know
But when it does, I'll surely go
But until then, my heart just aches
For my new home
I have dreamed, of standing there
In that crisp, refreshing air
No more doubt, and no more night
As we bask, engulfed in light
When He comes, we don't know
But when He does, we'll surely go
But while we're here, our hearts just ache
For our new home
This picture is from the new home that Livvy I inhabited in 2014. I bought this house shortly after Livvy (then 11 years old) sat me down at dinner and announced: “I want you to buy a house, I want to get a dog, and I want to go to Burroughs [for 7th grade].” I love her, so I set about making all those things happen. The song My New Home obviously had its origins in the first of these requests, though it quickly morphs to an eternal perspective.
As for the other songs in this set, the one that has the most interesting back-story is Wonderfully Made, which was written in a couple of days immediately after a challenge issued by my then pastor, Dan Doriani (STL's Central Pres), who asked whether any of the song-writers in the congregation could produce a song that spoke of the miraculous work of God in creating the intricacies of our human bodies. This song was the result. Alas, Dan never used it, choosing instead some new words that an assistant pastor matched to an existing hymn. Oh, well ….
